| Resumo | This study aims to present the actual UVI operational system forecast employed at Center for Weather Prediction and Climate Studies (CPTEC/INPE). Additionally, the performance the mentioned operational system is analyzed using ultraviolet erythemal solar radiation measured during the years 2005 and 2007 over Sao Paulo, which is one of the most densely populated regions in South America. The correlation coefficient between observed and estimated UV index is higher than 0.8, showing good performance of the operational system. This study also discusses how the knowledge of the geographical distribution UVI can help the decision maker improving the skin cancer awareness campaigns. Preliminary results show that in some regions at low a latitudes, the maximum IUV is between high (>7) and extreme (>11) during over all the year, therefore the UV alert should be frequently used to raise public awareness of the risk of UV radiation exposure. On the other hand, some regions of Southern South America present quite low values of IUV (>5) during the winter. Results of seasonal and internannual variability of IUV over Brazil show that any significant changes on the level of UV radiation over surface were observed during 2005 and 2009. The small changes (<5 %) on IUV during the last years were related to interannual variability of cloud and ozone concentration. |
